JAECOO has confirmed that the new J5 HEV will arrive in South Africa in 2026, marking the next step in the brand’s electrification plans. The compact hybrid SUV was recently unveiled at the OMODA & JAECOO International User Summit in Wuhu, China, showcasing the brand’s latest SHS hybrid system and design direction.

The SHS hybrid system combines petrol and electric power for improved efficiency and range. It allows the J5 HEV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, reach a top speed of 175 km/h, and achieve more than 1,000 km on a single tank. Fuel consumption is rated at 5.3L/100 km.

The system automatically adapts to different driving conditions, prioritising electric-like operation in most scenarios, with the petrol engine engaging when required. Drivers can also select between “Eco” and “Sport” modes depending on their preferences.

Inside, the J5 HEV features a 13.2-inch central display, an ergonomic column shifter, and various measures to enhance cabin comfort, including active noise reduction, acoustic glass, and improved sound insulation. The SUV also includes 20 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features and advanced battery protection for added safety.

“Following the successful introduction of the J7 SHS and OMODA C9 SHS plug-in hybrids, the JAECOO J5 HEV represents the next step in expanding our electrified offerings,” says Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager at OMODA & JAECOO South Africa. “With its blend of hybrid efficiency, smooth performance, and attainable pricing, it brings electrified mobility to a wider audience when it arrives in South Africa next year.”

Further details on local specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the launch in 2026.
