BMW M has confirmed that it will introduce fully electric high-performance models from 2027, marking a major milestone for the performance division. For the first time, BMW M’s motorsport-led philosophy will be applied to vehicles powered exclusively by electric drivetrains.

The upcoming models will be based on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform and are being developed to deliver the brand’s familiar driving character in electric form. According to BMW M, the new architecture supports high performance, long driving range, fast charging via 800-volt technology and efficient energy recuperation, allowing the vehicles to function as both everyday transport and track-capable machines.

A new electronic and control system forms the backbone of the next-generation BMW M models. Four high-performance control units, known as Superbrains, manage driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment and comfort systems. This setup allows faster data processing, improved responsiveness and support for future software updates.

BMW M’s electric drivetrain has been developed specifically for high-performance use. Each wheel is driven by its own electric motor, allowing precise control of power delivery and torque distribution. This configuration combines rear-wheel drive characteristics with all-wheel drive capability when required, while the front axle can be fully decoupled to improve efficiency and range during steady cruising.

Energy is supplied by a high-voltage battery with more than 100 kWh of usable capacity, based on BMW’s Gen6 technology. The battery has been adapted to handle high peak performance and faster charging and also forms part of the vehicle’s structure, improving overall rigidity and driving dynamics.

BMW M will also introduce lightweight construction measures, including the use of natural fibre materials. These materials, already tested in motorsport applications, offer similar properties to carbon fibre while reducing CO2e emissions during production.

Further details on individual models and specifications are expected closer to the 2027 launch.
