GWM P500 HEV Ultra Luxury long-term review

After spending considerable time behind the wheel of the GWM P500 HEV Ultra Luxury, it’s clear that this adventure-focused bakkie offers more than just bold styling. Finished in its striking blacked-out treatment, the P500 commands attention wherever it goes while delivering the comfort, technology, and refinement expected of a modern lifestyle bakkie.

The latest iteration stands out with its gloss-black grille, black roof rails, LED headlights, and smoked taillights, giving the already imposing bakkie even greater road presence. Whether parked in the city or covering long distances, the P500 rarely goes unnoticed.

Inside, GWM has created an impressively comfortable cabin. Black Nappa leather upholstery adds to the premium feel, while the heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats make long journeys particularly enjoyable. Over the course of our travels through several provinces, the spacious interior consistently impressed, offering generous legroom and comfort for all occupants.

Technology is another strong point. A large 14.6-inch touchscreen serves as the centrepiece of the dashboard, providing easy access to the vehicle’s functions and infotainment features. The system is complemented by a 10-speaker Harman Infinity sound system that delivers excellent audio quality.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid powertrain producing 255kW and 648Nm. Paired with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission and a standard four-wheel-drive system, the P500 feels confident whether navigating city traffic, cruising on the highway, or tackling gravel roads.

The all-black P500 leaves a lasting impression as a well-rounded lifestyle bakkie that successfully blends premium comfort, strong performance, modern technology, and standout styling. At R999,900, the P500 HEV Ultra Luxury offers a compelling alternative for buyers looking for a capable adventure vehicle that doesn’t compromise on comfort or equipment.
