JMC Vigus aims at the value bakkie market

We recently headed out to the Lion and Safari Park in Broederstroom to spend some time with JMC South Africa, which is distributed locally by Salvador Caetano Africa. The brand’s current local line-up is straightforward, consisting of the Vigus bakkie and the Carrying Plus truck, with additional derivatives expected later this year.

Our focus for the day was the JMC Vigus, specifically the Pro Double Cab in both 4X2 and 4X4 form.

    Engine and drivetrain

Both derivatives are powered by the same 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine producing 104kW and 350Nm. Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 4X4 variant adds a BorgWarner four-wheel-drive system, giving it extra capability when the road ends.

On paper, the outputs position the Vigus more as a work-focused offering than an outright performance contender, but for its intended use, the numbers are adequate.

    Specification and cabin

In Pro Double Cab guise, the Vigus comes equipped with leather seats, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring, a reverse camera and parking sensors. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system sits at the centre of the dash and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The package is rounded off with 17-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin itself is functional rather than flashy. It may not win design awards, but everything feels solid and straightforward, which aligns with its workhorse positioning.

On the road and off it

We completed a short 11km drive in the 4X2 derivative. The experience was pleasant and largely drama-free. The engine felt responsive enough for everyday use, and the gearbox delivered smooth shifts.

Switching to the 4X4, we tackled a brief off-road course using 4L. The Vigus handled the obstacles without issue, demonstrating that it has the hardware to back up its utility-focused credentials.

    Pricing

    Vigus Single Cab 4X2 MT – R299,900

Vigus Pro Double Cab 4X2 AT – R439,900

Vigus Pro Double Cab 4X4 AT – R499,900

    First impressions

From our short time behind the wheel, the JMC Vigus positions itself as a value-driven bakkie aimed at buyers who prioritise practicality and affordability. It may not challenge the segment leaders in outright polish, but it offers solid specification and capable performance at competitive pricing.
