Toyota has updated its best-selling Corolla Cross, with the GR-Sport derivative receiving a number of styling and interior enhancements aimed at giving the crossover a sportier appearance.
We recently spent time with the updated Corolla Cross GR-Sport at Zwartkops Raceway to see whether the changes are enough to keep one of South Africa’s most popular family vehicles fresh in an increasingly competitive segment.
Design
The most noticeable changes can be found on the outside. Up front, the GR-Sport receives a new black mesh grille, revised bumpers, and a slightly sharper overall appearance. Along the side are newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels, while the rear benefits from updated taillights, black badging, and a redesigned skid plate.
The updates are subtle rather than dramatic, but they help modernise the Corolla Cross without altering the formula that has made it such a success.
Inside, the changes are equally restrained. The GR-Sport receives black leather upholstery with red stitching, red seatbelts, aluminium pedals, and GR branding throughout the cabin. Toyota has also revised the centre console layout across the range, improving usability.

The Corolla Cross continues to offer one of the most user-friendly cabins in the segment. While it may not be the most luxurious interior on the market, the layout is intuitive, the controls are easy to reach, and everything feels well thought out. Space remains a strong point, making the Corolla Cross a practical choice for family buyers.
Engine options remain unchanged. The standard 1.8-litre petrol engine produces 103kW and 173Nm, while the hybrid pairs a 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor producing 72kW and 142Nm.
Our time behind the wheel was spent in the hybrid GR-Sport, and it continues to impress. The powertrain feels smooth and refined, while the transition between petrol and electric power is seamless in most driving situations.
As before, efficiency remains one of the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s biggest strengths. Toyota claims fuel consumption of 4.3L/100km, and based on our initial drive impressions, that figure appears achievable in everyday driving.
The GR-Sport remains comfortable and easy to drive, reinforcing why the Corolla Cross has become such a popular choice among South African buyers.

Verdict
The updates to the Corolla Cross GR-Sport are not revolutionary, but they don’t need to be.
Toyota has refined an already successful package with sharper styling, subtle interior improvements, and the same efficient hybrid powertrain that has helped make the Corolla Cross one of the country’s top-selling vehicles.
Based on our first drive, the GR-Sport remains one of the strongest contenders in the compact crossover segment.
