Chery has confirmed that it is preparing to enter the double-cab bakkie segment with an all-new model currently known as the KP31. The vehicle is expected to make its global debut in late 2026 or early 2027.
What immediately sets this upcoming bakkie apart is its powertrain. Chery says it will introduce a segment-first 2.5-litre turbodiesel plug-in hybrid system. The setup combines a diesel engine with electric drive technology, aiming to deliver strong torque while improving efficiency and reducing noise and vibration compared to traditional diesel models.
The KP31 will be built on Chery’s new Kaitan ladder-frame chassis. This platform has been developed to support internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains, giving the brand flexibility as regulations and market demands evolve. Structural strength, durability and versatility appear to be central to the platform’s design.

In terms of capability, Chery is targeting the numbers that matter in this segment. The KP31 is expected to offer a 1,000kg payload and a braked towing capacity of up to 3,500kg. The rear load bin has been designed to maximise usable space, with minimal intrusion from the wheel arches, and cab-chassis derivatives are also planned.
Off-road performance is clearly part of the development brief. The production model will feature front, centre and rear locking differentials, along with a low-range transfer case. Dedicated off-road driving modes and a tight-turn assist function have also been previewed to improve manoeuvrability in challenging terrain. Additional features such as underbody protection, integrated recovery points and a raised air intake further underline its intended purpose.
After the diesel plug-in hybrid derivative launches, Chery plans to expand the range with a petrol-powered plug-in hybrid version. Full specifications and further details will be released closer to the official unveiling.
The KP31 represents a significant move for Chery, particularly in markets like South Africa where the double-cab segment remains highly competitive and deeply established. Whether the diesel plug-in hybrid approach resonates with traditional bakkie buyers remains to be seen, but it certainly adds an interesting new direction to the segment.
