After spending time with the Audi SQ 8 Black Edition, it’s hard not to come away impressed. While the updates over the standard model are subtle, they add just enough to make the already striking SQ8 feel that little bit more special.
The Black Edition doesn’t reinvent the Q8’s design, but it doesn’t need to. The black exterior accents give the SUV a more purposeful look without going overboard, complementing what is still one of the cleanest and best-proportioned designs in Audi’s SUV line-up.

Step inside and the SQ 8 reminds you why Audi has built such a strong reputation for interior quality. The S sport seats are supportive without sacrificing comfort, the materials feel genuinely premium, and everything is laid out exactly where you’d expect it to be. Although Audi’s dual-screen infotainment system is beginning to show its age compared to newer rivals, it’s responsive, intuitive, and easy to live with.
Under the bonnet sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 373kW and 770Nm. Those numbers translate into effortless performance, with the SQ 8 dispatching the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.1 seconds. More impressive, though, is how easily it builds speed. Whether you’re overtaking on the highway or simply pulling away from a traffic light, the V8 always feels like it has plenty in reserve. Add in the unmistakable soundtrack and every drive becomes a little more memorable.

What stood out most during our time with the SQ 8 was how well it balances performance and refinement. It’s quick when you want it to be, yet settles into a comfortable, relaxed cruiser just as easily. The suspension does an excellent job of masking the SUV’s size, while the quattro all-wheel-drive system inspires confidence in almost any driving condition.
At R,2,675,500, the SQ 8 Black Edition certainly isn’t inexpensive, but it offers an appealing mix of luxury, everyday usability, and genuine performance. If you want the drama of a V8 without stepping into full RS territory, we’d argue the SQ8 remains the sweet spot of the Q8 range.
