The BMW 3 Series has always been central to the brand, setting the tone for what a sporty sedan should feel like. Now, it moves into a new era with the introduction of the all-electric BMW i3, which is set to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2027.
The i3 is part of BMW’s Neue Klasse line-up and represents a shift towards a fully electric future, while still carrying over the familiar character of the 3 Series.
At launch, the i3 will be offered as the i3 50 xDrive, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup. It produces 345kW and 645Nm, giving it performance that sits comfortably within the expectations of a modern BMW sedan.

In terms of design, BMW has taken a new direction but kept things recognisable. The proportions remain classic 3 Series, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a sleek roofline. Up front, the grille and headlights are integrated into a single light signature, while the rear keeps a clean look with horizontal lighting and a wide stance.
Inside, the focus shifts to a more digital and driver-focused experience. The new Panoramic iDrive system takes centre stage, paired with a layout that makes better use of space thanks to the dedicated electric platform.
BMW says the i3 has been engineered to retain its driving appeal. A new control system, referred to as the Heart of Joy, works alongside other onboard systems to deliver quicker responses and more precise handling. The aim is to keep that familiar balance of comfort and engagement the 3 Series is known for.

Range is one of the standout figures. BMW claims up to 900km on the WLTP cycle, supported by sixth-generation eDrive technology and an 800-volt electrical system. Fast charging is also part of the package, with the ability to add up to 400km of range in around 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
The i3 will be built at BMW’s Munich plant, which has undergone significant upgrades in preparation for the brand’s next generation of electric vehicles. Production is scheduled to begin in August 2026.
While full local specifications will be confirmed closer to launch, the BMW i3 gives a clear indication of where the 3 Series is heading. The formula remains familiar, but the powertrain marks a clear step forward.
