First drive: Haval H6 PHEV adds real punch to the line-up

We joined GWM South Africa in Midrand for the launch of the new Haval H6 PHEV, a model that builds on the familiar H6 formula but adds a proper electrified edge.

At the heart of it is a plug-in hybrid setup that pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors. In AWD form, it produces a claimed 268kW and 760Nm, which is a serious figure in this segment. On paper, it’s one of the more powerful options you can get at this price point.

On the road, that performance is noticeable. Power delivery is smooth and immediate, and the AWD system gives it a planted, composed feel when putting that power down. It doesn’t feel aggressive, but rather effortless, which suits the character of the car.

In electric mode, the H6 is quiet and refined, with up to 106km of claimed electric range. Around town, that means you can drive it like a full EV most of the time. When the petrol engine kicks in, the transition to hybrid power is seamless and doesn’t interrupt the driving experience.

Inside, the H6 PHEV leans heavily into tech and comfort. The cabin is built around GWM’s Coffee OS system, which integrates a 10.25-inch digital cluster and a large 14.6-inch infotainment screen. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Bluetooth connectivity and a nine-speaker sound system.

Comfort is also a strong point. You get electrically adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and ambient lighting. Rear passengers are also well catered for, with USB ports, a centre armrest and cup holders.

Safety and driver assistance are well covered too, with a 540-degree camera system and a full suite of active safety features.

    Verdict

A strong first showing. It’s quick, refined and packs a lot of tech, with the added benefit of usable electric range for daily driving.
