Omoda C5 1.5T SHS HEV: The hybrid that fixes the biggest problem

The Omoda C5 has returned to South Africa with a new trick up its sleeve: hybrid power. More importantly, it addresses one of the biggest criticisms levelled at the standard model. After spending time behind the wheel at the local launch, it became clear that this is more than just an exercise in improving fuel economy.

Visually, the C5 HEV remains a stylish family SUV, but there are enough changes to set it apart. Up front, it features a new signature diamond-matrix grille, while 18-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels and distinctive “Thunderbolt” LED taillights complete the updated look. It still has the same modern road presence that has helped make the C5 a common sight on South African roads.

Inside, the cabin retains its premium feel. Dual 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard and are complemented by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Music lovers will also appreciate the eight-speaker sound system, which delivers impressive audio quality whether you’re listening to amapiano on the school run or your favourite playlist on a longer journey. The downside is the continued reliance on the touchscreen for many everyday functions, as the lack of physical buttons and dials can be frustrating while driving.

The biggest improvement lies beneath the bonnet. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine works together with a 1.83kWh battery pack, an electric motor, and a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission to produce a combined 165kW and 310Nm. Thankfully, the CVT has been replaced, and the difference is immediately noticeable. Overtaking no longer requires careful planning, with the hybrid system delivering strong acceleration and a much more responsive driving experience. The additional weight of the hybrid components also helps the suspension feel more settled, while the electric motor allows the C5 HEV to move silently through low-speed traffic before the petrol engine joins in.

Efficiency is another highlight. Omoda claims fuel consumption of just 4.9L/100km, and over our 150km drive route, we recorded an impressive 5.1L/100km. That translates into a real-world driving range of around 1,000km, making the C5 HEV an excellent companion for both daily commuting and longer road trips.

The only real compromise is practicality. While the cabin offers good space for passengers, the boot may feel a little tight for a family of five heading away on holiday.

Priced at R479,900, with a launch price of R469,900 until the end of April, the Omoda C5 HEV represents a meaningful step forward. It delivers stronger performance, significantly improved drivability, and excellent fuel economy, while retaining the bold styling and generous equipment that made the C5 popular in the first place. For buyers looking for an efficient family SUV without sacrificing performance, the C5 HEV deserves serious consideration.
