Suzuki South Africa has expanded its SUV line-up with the introduction of the new Across 1.5 Mild Hybrid. Positioned above the Grand Vitara, the newcomer combines SUV practicality, a generous list of standard features, and Suzuki’s SHVS mild-hybrid technology.

We recently spent time behind the wheel of the range-topping GLX automatic in Cape Town to see what the Across brings to an increasingly competitive segment.

The Across adopts a clean and relatively understated design Up front, it features LED lighting and a prominent grille, while the side profile is complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels, with machined-finish items reserved for the GLX derivative. The SUV’s proportions give it a confident road presence without appearing overly aggressive.

Our favourite angle is the rear, where a full-width light bar helps create a modern appearance. It’s a simple design that avoids unnecessary styling flourishes, and we think it works well.

Inside, the Across feels well equipped and thoughtfully laid out. All models receive a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless phone charging.

The GLX adds several premium touches, including a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, ventilated front seats, and an Infinity by Harman audio system. The infotainment system is crisp and easy to use, while the ventilated seats proved particularly useful during the warm Cape Town weather. Overall, the cabin strikes a good balance between technology, comfort, and practicality.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with Suzuki’s SHVS mild-hybrid system. Outputs stand at 76kW and 137Nm, with buyers able to choose between a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. Our time was spent in the automatic derivative, and the powertrain impressed with its smooth and relaxed nature. The six-speed automatic works well with the engine and avoids the constant gear hunting that can sometimes affect vehicles in this segment.

The Across is not designed to be a performance SUV, but it feels more than adequate for everyday driving duties. Ride comfort is also commendable, making it a pleasant companion on longer journeys. Suzuki claims fuel consumption of 5.3L/100km. During our drive route, we recorded 5.6L/100km, which is close enough to suggest the official figure is achievable in real-world conditions.

Based on our first drive impressions, the Suzuki Across makes a strong case for itself. It offers a comfortable driving experience, generous equipment levels, impressive fuel efficiency, and a clean design that should appeal to buyers looking for a practical family SUV. While it may not be the most exciting vehicle in the segment, it gets the fundamentals right, and that is likely to matter more to its target audience.

    Pricing
