BMW has officially unveiled the fifth-generation X5, introducing a completely redesigned luxury SUV that adopts the brand’s latest Neue Klasse design language and, for the first time, an all-electric derivative.

The new X5 will be offered with a range of powertrains, including petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models. South Africa is expected to receive the X5 xDrive40d, X5 50e plug-in hybrid, and the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive when the model launches locally in early 2027.

The biggest news is the arrival of the BMW iX5, which uses BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. BMW claims a driving range of up to 845km, thanks to an 800V electrical architecture and a new-generation battery featuring cylindrical cells. Faster charging and bidirectional charging capability also form part of the package.

Visually, the X5 receives a cleaner, more modern appearance inspired by BMW’s Neue Klasse models. Up front, it features a redesigned kidney grille with Iconic Glow illumination, new double-X LED lighting signatures, and a more upright stance. Flush “Winglet” door handles and wheel options of up to 23 inches further modernise the SUV’s appearance.

Inside, BMW has completely redesigned the cabin. A new Panoramic iDrive system combines a full-width Panoramic Vision display with a free-standing central touchscreen, a new multifunction steering wheel, and BMW Operating System X. South African models will also receive slate interior trim as standard, while BMW’s Passenger Screen will be available as an option.

BMW says the new X5 continues to focus on combining comfort with driving dynamics. Adaptive suspension is fitted as standard, while selected models will offer Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilisation. The latest generation of BMW’s Level 2 driver assistance systems also comes standard.

Production of the fifth-generation X5 will begin at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States during August 2026, with the South African market launch scheduled for early 2027.
