Cape Town set the scene for the arrival of the new Renault Duster, and the latest version of the compact SUV makes an immediate impression. This is a far more confident-looking Duster than before, still recognisably rugged, but now with enough modern design and cabin technology to feel properly competitive in a crowded segment.

The exterior is defined by a bold, muscular stance. A prominent front grille, signature LED daytime running lights, flared wheel arches and substantial black body cladding all reinforce its SUV credentials. Distinctive alloy wheels and sharper body lines give the Duster a more contemporary edge, striking a good balance between urban appeal and the robust look buyers expect from the nameplate.

The flagship Iconic Edition brings a notably more premium ambience inside. Its dark interior, contrast stitching and upgraded materials help elevate the cabin, while the power-assisted, ventilated front seats with lumbar support were especially welcome during our day in Cape Town. The dual-pane panoramic sunroof adds a sense of space, while the 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system places the Duster firmly in the modern, connected SUV conversation.

Power comes from Renault’s 1.3-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, producing 116 kW and 260 Nm of torque. In Iconic and Techno EDC form, it is paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission that drives the front wheels. On paper, that output promises lively performance for daily driving, with enough torque to make overtaking and longer highway journeys feel easy rather than strained.

One disappointment is that the new Duster is not offered with a diesel powertrain, nor does it get a 4×4 derivative. Both would have suited its tough, adventure-ready personality, particularly for buyers who regularly travel beyond tar roads. The front-wheel-drive petrol line-up is more city-friendly, but it leaves some of the Duster’s traditional off-road charm on the table.

The important number is R499,999. Even in top-spec Iconic guise, the Duster stays below the half-million-rand mark. This is particularly significant because the outgoing model was priced above R500,000. It is unusual, and welcome, to see a new model arrive at a lower price than the vehicle it replaces, especially given its turbocharged performance, upgraded cabin, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats and touchscreen technology.

    Duster Evolution 1.0T Manual: R339,999

    Duster Evolution 1.3T Manual: R379,999

    Duster Techno 1.3T EDC: R399,999

    Duster Techno+ 1.3T EDC: R439,999

    Duster Iconic 1.3T EDC: R499,999

The new Renault Duster may not offer every drivetrain enthusiasts had hoped for, but it is a solid, attractive and convincingly modern SUV. It looks tougher, feels more upmarket and offers strong value across the range. For buyers wanting an SUV with real presence without crossing the R500,000 threshold, the new Duster makes a compelling case.
