Volvo Cars has introduced long-range plug-in hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs, marking the company’s most significant electrification push yet for its mid-size and large SUV line-up. The new models are set to launch in European and American markets first, with South African availability expected in the first half of 2027.

The updated XC60 offers up to 200 kilometres of electric-only range, while the XC90 delivers up to 160 kilometres, more than double the range of their previous hybrid counterparts. The improvement comes courtesy of a larger, floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor, paired with a petrol engine that engages when additional range is needed.

“The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, in a statement. He added that the new variants, alongside the upcoming all-electric EX60, give the company its strongest electrified line-up yet in the segment.

Design and safety overhaul

The XC60 receives the more extensive update of the two models, with a redesigned front and rear end, a reworked grille and refined Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. Inside, the cabin has been refreshed with new dashboard and door-panel designs, wood trim and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery.

Volvo has also expanded the XC60’s safety systems. The vehicle can now detect potential collisions and respond automatically by steering around hazards, braking to avoid impact or alerting occupants before they open a door into the path of an oncoming cyclist.

Additional driver-assistance features, including lane-change assist and a 360-degree camera system, are supported by an upgraded array of radars, cameras and sensors.

Both SUVs are equipped with an 11.2-inch touchscreen running Volvo’s latest infotainment platform, which integrates Google’s Gemini AI assistant. The system allows drivers to issue natural-language commands for navigation, points of interest and messaging.

Strategic significance

Company officials described the new hybrids as a bridge towards full electrification, aimed at extending the commercial life of two of Volvo’s most established nameplates while the broader industry transition to battery-electric vehicles continues. Both models will also remain available in mild-hybrid form.

Volvo said the vehicles will receive over-the-air software updates after purchase, consistent with its approach across the current model range.

Order books for both the XC60 and XC90, including Black Edition trims, opened Tuesday in select markets. Production is scheduled to begin later this autumn.
