We spent time with the facelifted Hyundai Staria 2.2 Luxury during its launch, getting a first look at the updates to Hyundai’s large people mover and an opportunity to experience it on the road.

The exterior changes are subtle. The facelift brings revised bumpers, a reworked grille, updated daytime running lights and new wheel designs. The Staria’s distinctive shape remains largely unchanged, but these updates give it a fresher appearance.

Inside, the changes are more noticeable. Dual 12.3-inch displays for the infotainment system and instrument cluster bring a more modern feel to the cabin, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard. The Elite and Luxury models also feature a rotary gear selector, freeing up space around the centre console.

Power comes from a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine producing 130 kW and 430 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It feels well suited to the Staria’s role as a large family and passenger mover, although the engine has to work harder when the vehicle is carrying a full complement of passengers and luggage.

With seating for up to nine people, space remains one of the Staria’s biggest strengths. Despite its size, it offers a driving experience that feels more car-like than you might expect from such a large vehicle.

Priced at R1,324,900, the Staria 2.2 Luxury combines its distinctive design with a spacious cabin, updated technology and the practicality of carrying up to nine passengers.
