Toyota has long cemented itself as a household brand that delivers across all segments. The Fortuner has been carried that ethos for a number of years now and the current generation was recently updated with specification enhancements. These updates will not be seen externally unless you get the new additional colour options. However, the best-selling seven-seater SUV tag is not by mistake but by maintaining the winning formula in terms of the familiar exterior.

So, the question is what is new then?

Our test unit, the range-topping Fortuner 2.8 VX, receives an upgraded dual-climate control and a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM). Meanwhile, audiophiles will be pleased by option of selecting their favourite tunes via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and pumping them on the 11-speaker JBL Premium Sound System. Additionally, blind spot monitoring gets jacked up rear cross traffic alert which improves safety when reversing.

Safety and tech up upgrades make the practical SUV ever-more endearing. Naturally, there will be fight for charging as there’s only one USB port but thankfully the 12V’s across the car will come in handy.

    Does it still perform?

The updated Fortuner VX retains the 2.8-litre diesel engine with 150kW/500Nm outputs. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the claimed fuel consumption is 7.9l/100km.The power is more than adequate to carry its large frame and delivers on the open road when overtaking. It also remains fairly smooth and refined across all terrains.

Our time with the Fortuner yielded an average fuel consumption of 9.1L/100km mostly with city driving. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to do any off-roading but we have no doubt the large SUV will perform exceptionally if required to do so.

Overall, and in line with the segment, the Fortuner still offers the value proposition that larger families or adventure junkies are after. The Fortuner is priced from R633,200 and it is sold with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000 service plan.
