Late last year, Mercedes-Benz revealed the updated Mercedes-Benz A-Class range which received subtle yet noticeable exterior as well as interior updates. The A-Class range also received numerous technology and safety updates, and electrified powertrains.

    Updated exterior styling

On the outside, the updated A-Class duo get a redesigned radiator grille with star pattern and the flat headlamps, LED headlights are available as optional extras. The sporty character is underlined by externally flush wheels with four additional rim designs in sizes up to 19 inches, including optional high-gloss black painted light-alloy wheels in multi-spoke design and with a high-gloss rim flange for the AMG Line.

At the rear, the new A-Class get a redesigned rear diffuser and LED taillights as standard. A variety of non-metallic/metallic and Manufaktur paint finishes will be available for customers.

    Updated interior styling and technology

Inside, the new A-Class range gets three-dimensionally embossed Artico upholstery. The Progressive trim level offers three different interior colours: black, a luxurious-looking beige and the new, zeitgeisty sage grey. A new, dark carbon-fibre look trim element further enhances both the instrument panel and the doors in these models. The AMG Line models features bright brushed aluminium trim and red contrasting top-stitching in the Artico/Microcut seats.

Other noteworthy interior highlights include a newly designed nappa steering leather wheel, a redesigned centre console and the latest and highly customisable MBUX infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. As standard, the updated A-Class range gets a freestanding dual-screen display with a 7-inch and the larger 10.25-inch display taking centre stage. Optional are two 10.25-inch displays.

    Upgraded safety assistance systems

The new A-Class has also been given an update in terms of safety assistance. With the upgrade of the Driver Assistance Package, for example, the control of the Lane Keeping Assist is much more comfortable by using the Active Steering Control. The next generation of the Parking Package supports longitudinal parking and offers, among other things, 360-degree visualisation for camera-assisted parking using 3D images.

    Electrified petrol and diesel powertrains

Locally, the A-Class hatchback will solely be available with a petrol engine – A 200. The sedan will be available with both petrol and diesel engines – A 200 and A 200d. The 1.3 litre turbo-petrol four cylinder engine in the A 200 delivers 120kW and 270Nm while the 1.95 litre turbodiesel four cylinder engine in the A 200d delivers 110kW and 320Nm.

The petrol is paired to Mercedes-Benz’s 7-speed DCT gearbox while the diesel is mated to an 8-speed DCT gearbox. Both powertrains now feature 48-volt electrical system that supports agility when starting off with 10 kW more power as well as a new belt-driven starter-generator (RSG).

    Updated A-Class range pricing

    A 200 Hatch 7G-DCT – R796,560

    A 200 Sedan 7G-DCT – R851,560

    A 200 d Sedan 8G-DCT – R920,299

Pricing includes a 5-year/100,000 km PremiumDrive Platinum service and maintenance plan, as well as CO2 tax.
