New Toyota Land Cruiser Prado: A retro-modern adventure machine

Recently, we had the opportunity to attend the launch of the all-new Land Cruiser Prado in Mozambique, and a few key features really caught our attention. This retro-inspired model has grown in size—it’s now longer, taller, and wider, offering even more interior space for its 7-seater configuration. The Land Cruiser Prado is available in four-grades: VX, VX-R, VX-First Edition and VX-R First Edition Bi-Tone. The “First Edition” model, finished in a striking Sand Beige, truly stands out with its circular headlamps, First Edition mudguards, unique wheels, and the option of a bi-tone exterior color.

A new level of comfort and technology stepping inside

It’s clear that the new Prado is a massive upgrade from its predecessor. The First Edition variant we experienced was packed with luxury features, including heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, a digital rear-view mirror, and convenient wireless charging. This mix of advanced tech and comfort ensures a premium driving experience for both daily commutes and rugged adventures. We love the looks, but die-hard Land Cruiser Prado fans might not be happy on the practicality front. The spare wheel now finds its way underneath the car. While this doesn’t eat into boot space, it has become a bit of a hassle when it comes to changing a tyre.

Power and Performance Under the hood

The Prado is equipped with a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine that delivers 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, paired with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. As expected from a Land Cruiser, all models come with full-time four-wheel drive, a centre locking differential, and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range, offering excellent off-road capability.

    Off-roading in Mozambique

We put the Prado to the test during an early morning off-road excursion from our beach resort in Mozambique. The powerful 2.8-litre diesel engine didn’t disappoint, especially when combined with Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select (MTS). Switching to Sand mode made tackling dunes an easy task. The Prado’s improved approach and departure angles, along with increased ground clearance, provide an even more capable off-road experience. On tar, the new Land Cruiser shows extreme levels of comfort.

    Verdict

The new Land Cruiser Prado is undoubtedly poised for success, with or without our endorsement. That said, it strikes an impressive balance—honoring the Land Cruiser’s iconic legacy, meeting the specific needs of the local market, and introducing modern updates to meet global standards. On top of all that, it manages to come in at a more competitive price than its key rivals. If you have the means and the desire, there’s little reason to hesitate.
