    The SUV market is booming, and while some may argue that traditional sedans are fading, we found ourselves pleasantly surprised by the 2024 GWM Tank 300. Transitioning from a compact sedan, we jumped into this rugged SUV without feeling like we’d traded style for substance.

    The Tank 300 is powered by a robust 2.0L turbocharged Hybrid engine, delivering a hearty 255 kW and 648 Nm of torque. Mated to a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission, the drive is smooth, responsive, and downright enjoyable. Despite our off-road adventures and urban escapades, we managed to maintain an okay fuel economy of around 9.5 L/100km, but city driving bumped that up to 13 L/100 km. What’s more, the Tank 300 never felt underwhelming; if anything, it exceeded our expectations, proving itself as a capable performer in a variety of conditions.

    Steering and handling are where the Tank 300 truly shines. It strikes a fine balance between comfort and control, allowing for confident cornering without sacrificing ride quality. The steering is reassuringly precise, with a solid on-center feel that enhances the driving experience – and a welcome experience considering that this is an SUV.

    Step inside, and you’re greeted by an interior that rivals many premium competitors. The quality of materials is impressive, featuring leather upholstery, soft-touch surfaces, and thoughtfully designed controls. The dashboard is clean and intuitive, with a digital instrument cluster that’s easy to read and understand. Connectivity is well taken care of, with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay included, along with a wireless charging pad that’s conveniently switchable.

    The tech offerings don’t stop there; the Tank 300 comes equipped with a suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring, ensuring peace of mind on every journey. Additional luxuries like heated seats, panoramic sunroof, and a premium audio system round out a well-appointed cabin.

    Spending time in the GWM Tank 300 left us convinced that this SUV is more than just a trend—it’s a statement of capability and comfort. With its spacious interior, impressive tech features, and rugged good looks, it caters to both adventure seekers and everyday drivers alike.

    Starting at R725,950, the GWM Tank 300 offers remarkable value with a 5-year/100,000km service plan, a 5-year/200,000km warranty, and service intervals set at every 10,000km. It’s an exciting time for SUVs, and the Tank 300 is undeniably making its mark.
