There has certainly been an influx of Chinese manufacturers in the local market, along with a growing number of what are referred to as Super Hybrid SUVs from the same region. What exactly is a Super Hybrid? In simple terms, it is an advanced plug-in hybrid electric vehicle with a larger battery that allows for a significantly longer electric-only driving range, often exceeding 100 km. This is where the market is heading, and it is no coincidence that Chery is positioning itself at the forefront of this technology.

We spent some time with the reimagined hybrid model, the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH, to see whether the hype is justified.

Looks

The Tiggo 7 CSH retains the bold and modern design of its standard counterpart, enhanced by premium finishes and distinctive styling elements. It looks the part, and there is little to fault when it comes to its exterior design.

Interior

Inside, the Tiggo 7 CSH features a dual 12.3-inch display setup, consisting of a fully digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The cabin is a pleasant space to be in, and the infotainment display is crisp and clear. That said, the system is not the easiest to navigate while driving. On the positive side, space is generous throughout the SUV, making it a comfortable option for families.

Power and drive

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 265 kW and 530 Nm. The Tiggo 7 CSH can travel up to 93 km in electric mode thanks to its 18.3 kWh battery pack, while Chery claims a combined driving range of up to 1,200 km.

Once the seatbelt is on, foot on the brake and the gear selector pushed into drive, the Tiggo 7 CSH pulls off smoothly and never feels underpowered. Our daily commute was under 70 km, and with the option to charge at work every second day, we barely touched the fuel tank during our seven-day test.

Final word

We have long held the view that hybrids make sense in a market that is still finding its footing with full electric vehicles. Chery appears to have found a formula that works, offering realistic range that would comfortably allow a drive from Johannesburg to Durban with range to spare. Beyond that, it ticks the key boxes for family use while reducing fuel consumption.
