DRIVEN: Land Rover Discovery D350 Dynamic HSE

    By Sala Masindane

The Land Rover Discovery has long been one of the go-to options in the large SUV segment. The fifth generation arrived locally in 2017 and has remained largely unchanged since then. Its exterior design was contentious when it first launched, and the offset number plate and grille treatment had many tongues wagging. As with most new designs, it took time to grow on the masses.

Today, we are familiar with the rounded exterior look, but it does feel overdue for an exterior refresh. The introduction of the new Defender has not done the Discovery any favours, and at times it feels like the unloved stepchild within the JLR family. The market has moved on, and in some areas the Discovery does feel behind the times. That said, we at KOW are big admirers of the Discovery and recently spent time with the updated model.

    What’s new?

As mentioned, the Discovery has largely stayed the same over the years. The most noticeable updates include new alloy wheel options. While the exterior design remains unchanged, it still manages to command attention on the road.

    Inside

Step inside and the familiar cabin greets you. It features an 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. While the cabin may not be packed with the latest tech gimmicks, the infotainment system works well and is easy to use. The Meridian sound system enhanced most of our journeys, delivering impressive audio quality.

Space is where the Discovery continues to shine. It is a true seven-seater that offers ample room for passengers in all rows. The Defender 130 is perhaps the closest comparison in terms of space, although it can feel too large for regular everyday driving.

    Engine and drive

Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre turbodiesel inline-six engine producing 257 kW and 700 Nm. Power is delivered to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

This engine ensures that the Discovery is not only a capable off-road vehicle but also a highly competent daily companion. Ride quality is comfortable and composed, making long journeys feel effortless.

    Final word

It is no secret that the Discovery has lost some of its spotlight, and that may well be an unintended consequence of JLR’s focus on the Defender. Spending time with the Discovery reminded us just how accomplished an all-round vehicle it still is. There is a real sense of calm inside the cabin, combined with space for the entire family.

It may not enjoy the same popularity as the Defender, but there is something about the Discovery that quietly exudes confidence. While it may be showing its age, it remains one of the best large family SUVs still available on the market.

The Land Rover Discovery D350 Dynamic HSE is priced from R2,136,800.
