My grandfather’s business of which my father was managing director was Maxwell Campbell which sold, amongst other vehicles, (1950 to 1970) Land Rovers. I was looking for an old Land Rover to restore and found one for sale in Pietermaritzburg which had done 79,000 km. It was manufactured in 1979 with a six cylinder 2.6 L petrol engine. The vehicle spent its first part of its life in Namibia and then on a farm in Lions River where it spent 15 years in a shed. It was then acquired by a magistrate in Pietermaritzburg from whom I bought it.

The Land Rover was stripped to a chassis and reconditioned which included rewiring and a complete paint job by Classic Coach Works near Gateway in Durban. The Land Rover has now done 82,000 km and is used on my farm in Nottingham Road. The engine runs perfectly and has recently gone up and down Sani Pass at low range without missing a beat.

My next plan is a jaguar  E-type.
