In our recent encounter with the facelifted BMW 320d, we found the technology to be a welcomed ally rather than an adversary. The vehicle introduces the “Automate My Habits” feature, a futuristic touch that autonomously handles tasks such as opening the side window in car parks and providing reverse assistance in tricky parking situations.

    Refreshed interior with new gadgets

The cabin undergoes a refreshing update, featuring a consolidated wide and curved screen that seamlessly integrates with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The configurability of these features adds a layer of personalization to the driving experience. Also, noteworthy is the transition of the gear shifter from a more traditional lever setup.

The user-friendly technology in the refined cabin adds to the overall appeal of the 320d. The real-world performance of these features were an absolute marvel to live with and proved that technology, when applied intelligently, can improve user experience and be cumbersome. While it may not match the practicality of an SUV, the 320d doesn’t leave you feeling shortchanged in terms of functionality and convenience. It’s a testament to BMW’s commitment to delivering a well-rounded driving experience that isn’t heavily compromised.

    Frugal diesel engine

Under the hood, the BMW 320d retains its reliable 2.0L turbodiesel engine, delivering 140kW and 400 Nm of torque while maintaining an impressive fuel efficiency of under 5.0 l/100km. The combination of rapid power delivery that showcased the balance between performance and eco-friendliness, is a combination that is so balanced – the driver doesn’t get left to be torn between the two achievements.

    Verdict

Moving beyond the technological enhancements, our extended time with the BMW 320d LCI also revealed a host of highlights that left a lasting impression and one thing remained clear – and that is this vehicle strikes a harmonious balance between cutting-edge technology, performance, and practicality. With a starting price of R935,313, the facelifted BMW 320d proves that embracing technology can enhance the driving experience without sacrificing the core values of a dynamic and practical premium sedan.
