Stylish and capable. We drive the VW T-Roc R-Line

VW’s refreshed T-Roc is undeniably a funky-looking vehicle, particularly in its R-Line guise, which exudes style and sophistication. Its exterior is a blend of modernity and boldness, featuring sleek lines, distinctive LED headlights, and a sporty front grille that commands attention on the road. The overall aesthetic is complemented by chrome accents and stylish alloy wheels, emphasizing its dynamic appeal in the crowded SUV market.

Powering our test T-Roc was a robust 2.0-liter TSI engine, delivering an impressive 140 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. Coupled with a responsive 7-speed DSG transmission and Volkswagen’s advanced 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, the T-Roc promises spirited performance and confident handling across varied driving conditions.

Stepping inside, the T-Roc R-Line offers a blend of luxury and technology aimed at enhancing the driving experience. Premium leather upholstery, digital screens for both infotainment and driver information, keyless entry and start, and compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay ensure seamless connectivity. The inclusion of a panoramic roof further enhances the sense of spaciousness and openness within the cabin, adding to its overall appeal.

While the initial impressions of the T-Roc are positive in terms of its modern design and feature set, there are nuances that warrant consideration. Despite its advanced features, the driving experience occasionally hints at an old-school feel, with handling characteristics that may feel heavier than expected in this segment. Similarly, while the interior boasts high-quality materials and advanced technology, some aspects of its design may come across as uninspired or lacking in personality compared to its exterior allure.

On the road, the T-Roc R-Line delivers a balanced driving experience with sufficient power and agility for daily commuting and weekend adventures alike. The engine’s output ensures brisk acceleration, while the transmission shifts seamlessly between gears, contributing to a smooth and enjoyable drive. The 4Motion all-wheel-drive system enhances stability and traction, particularly in adverse weather conditions or off-road excursions, reaffirming the T-Roc’s versatility and capability.

In terms of value for money, the T-Roc commands a starting price of R605,100, rising to R708,900 for the fully equipped variant. This pricing positions it on the premium end within its segment, offering value to only a few, as this also sets its price tag at the starting point of the next segment.

In conclusion, the 2024 VW T-Roc R-Line presents a well-rounded option in the compact SUV market, appealing to drivers who prioritize style, technology, and a touch of sportiness in their vehicle choice. While it may not be flawless in every aspect, its blend of modern design, robust performance, and advanced features makes it a compelling choice for those seeking a stylish and capable SUV for urban and adventurous pursuits alike.
