As the SUV market continues to grow, Honda has quietly refined its recipe for success, and the 2024 CR-V 1.5T Exclusive CVT stands as proof. Transitioning from a smaller crossover to this latest CR-V feels like upgrading to a tailored suit—polished, comfortable, and undeniably versatile – settling all the controversy it sparked when it was launched.

It is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged engine delivering a respectable 140kW and 240Nm of torque. The power is channelled through a CVT gearbox to all four wheels, ensuring smooth delivery across a variety of terrains. While some CVTs can feel uninspiring, Honda’s execution is commendable—it’s responsive and well-matched to the engine’s output. We averaged a competitive 8.2L/100km during our test, which is reasonable given the power and added weight of the all-wheel-drive system.

Handling is where the CR-V impresses. The suspension strikes a fine balance between ride comfort and handling composure, soaking up road imperfections with ease while maintaining confidence around bends. The steering is light yet precise, making urban navigation and highway cruising equally enjoyable. On rougher roads, the AWD system shines, providing extra grip and assurance without sacrificing efficiency.

Inside, the CR-V 1.5T Exclusive exudes a sense of modern practicality. Honda has focused on quality, with soft-touch materials, leather upholstery, and tasteful faux wood accents that elevate the cabin experience. The seats are supportive and well-cushioned, perfect for long drives, and the panoramic sunroof floods the interior with natural light.

Tech-savvy buyers will appreciate the CR-V’s feature-rich infotainment system. A 9-inch touchscreen takes centre stage, offering Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, along with a wireless charging pad. The digital driver display is sharp and intuitive, while additional luxuries like a heated steering wheel and a premium audio system make every journey more enjoyable.

Honda has not skimped on safety either. Its SENSING suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring, giving drivers peace of mind in various conditions. A 360-degree camera and parking sensors round out the impressive list of safety features.

The CR-V’s spaciousness is another highlight. With seating for five and a cavernous boot, it’s ready for family adventures or cross-country road trips. The rear seats fold flat effortlessly, creating a vast cargo area that adds to its practicality.

Starting at R961,300, the Honda CR-V 1.5T Exclusive CVT offers strong value for its segment and worries the competition as well. It is backed by a 5-year/200,000km warranty and a 5-year/90,000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 15,000km, which ensures low running costs. If you’re in the market for a premium yet practical SUV with a reputation for reliability, the 2024 CR-V deserves a top spot on your list.
