We recently joined BMW South Africa at Langhams Lifestyle Estate for the official local launch of the new BMW 1 Series range. The new 1 Series ushers in fresh design updates, upgraded technology, improved chassis dynamics, and the addition of 48V mild-hybrid powertrains, signalling BMW’s continued push toward efficiency and performance.

    Sharper, smarter and longer

We kicked off our day with the fourth-generation BMW 1 Series, internally known as the F70. The hatchback has grown up, literally, boasting increased length and a bolder presence. Up front, it sports angular LED headlights with distinctive “four-eyed” DRL signatures, a redesigned kidney grille, and reworked bumpers. The rear has also been thoroughly refreshed with chevron-style LED tail lights and new alloy wheel designs, lending the 1 Series a sportier stance.

    Premium minimalism meets digital innovation

Step inside, and it’s clear BMW has taken cues from the latest X1 and X2. The interior features a leather-free, tech-forward cabin highlighted by BMW’s signature Curved Display, which combines a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen powered by BMW Operating System 9.

Buyers can opt for M Sport seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, and a Harman Kardon sound system. Despite its compact proportions, the 1 Series offers a practical boot capacity of up to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded.

    Powertrains

BMW South Africa is offering two mild-hybrid petrol engines at launch:

    • BMW 118: 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine producing 115 kW and 230 Nm
    • BMW M135: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine delivering 233 kW and 400 Nm

Both are paired with a 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, balancing efficiency and sporty performance.

    Pricing:

    • BMW 118: R713,395
    • BMW 118 M Sport: R753,395
    • BMW M135: R982,768
