Citroën Aircross 1.2 Plus: Quirky charm with caveats

Citroën doesn’t do boring, and the 2025 Aircross 1.2 Plus proves that personality can still matter in a sea of predictable compact SUVs. With its bold styling, funky details and unmistakable French flair, this is a car that stands out before it even turns a wheel. Living with it, however, is a bit like dating someone with a big personality: charming, refreshing, but occasionally demanding patience.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine producing a modest 60 kW and 115 Nm, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. This setup is clearly aimed at efficiency and affordability rather than performance. Around town, the engine feels adequate and reasonably light on its feet, but on the open road you will need to plan overtaking carefully and work the gearbox to maintain momentum. Fuel consumption averages around 6.0 L/100 km, keeping running costs comfortably low.
The driving experience is unmistakably Citroën. The suspension is soft and forgiving, gliding over speed bumps and broken tar with ease. Push harder into corners, though, and body roll quickly reminds you that this is a comfort-first machine. Steering is light and relaxed, making it well suited to urban commutes and parking manoeuvres. This is not a driver’s compact SUV, and it does not pretend to be.

Inside, the Aircross continues its quirky charm. Bright accents, funky air vents and supportive seats give the cabin a cheerful vibe. Space is a real strength. Rear legroom and headroom are excellent for the segment, and the 410-litre boot remains one of the largest in its class. The infotainment system looks modern, but responsiveness can be inconsistent, and touchscreen-based climate controls will not suit everyone.
Safety features include lane departure warning, hill-start assist, stability control and multiple airbags, although more advanced driver-assist systems are limited at this price point.

Priced from R281,500, the Aircross 1.2 undercuts many rivals and is backed by a 5-year or 100,000 km warranty, along with a 4-year or 60,000 km service plan. Resale value may not rival the big Japanese brands, but for buyers seeking something different, that may be a trade-off worth making.
Verdict
The 2025 Citroën Aircross 1.2 is all about comfort, character and space, not speed. If you value individuality and easy-going urban driving over outright performance, this French crossover makes a compelling case.
