The new Opel Grandland marks a significant step forward for the brand. Drawing inspiration from the Opel Experimental concept, it introduces a much bolder design language that gives the SUV an identity its predecessor lacked. The new 3D Vizor front fascia, illuminated Griffin logo, Edge Light Technology, 19-inch alloy wheels, and Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD headlights with more than 50,000 lighting elements ensure it stands out on the road.

The transformation continues inside. The cabin has been completely redesigned and feels modern, spacious, and well put together. A 16-inch infotainment touchscreen sits at the centre of the dashboard, complemented by an Intelli-HUD head-up display and wireless smartphone charging. The AGR-certified front seats, complete with massage and ventilation functions, are exceptionally comfortable, while rear passengers benefit from generous headroom and legroom. Boot space is equally impressive, offering 550 litres with the rear seats in place and expanding to 1,645 litres when folded.

Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 134kW and 240Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Opel claims a combined fuel consumption of 7.0L/100km, while a comprehensive list of safety features includes Intelli-Drive 2.0, a 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera, and a wide range of driver assistance systems.

On the road, the Grandland delivers a comfortable and composed driving experience. Ride quality is impressive, and it settles into long-distance cruising with ease. Our only criticism is the powertrain. While adequate for everyday driving, the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine can feel strained under harder acceleration, particularly during overtaking, which also has a noticeable impact on fuel consumption.

At R789,000, the new Grandland GS Line is a well-rounded family SUV that gets far more right than wrong. Its bold styling, high-quality cabin, generous practicality, and extensive equipment list make it a compelling package. A more responsive engine would elevate the driving experience further, but even as it stands, the Grandland represents a major improvement over its predecessor and deserves serious consideration in the midsize SUV segment.
