Omoda C9 PHEV impresses with style and power

If it feels like plug-in hybrids are popping up everywhere lately, you’re not imagining it. Chinese brands especially have been rolling them out at a rapid pace, each offering more tech and value than the last. One of the most attention-grabbing arrivals is the Omoda C9 1.5T PHEV Explore AWD, and we spent some time with it to see what all the fuss is about.

    Exterior

At first glance, the C9 makes a strong statement. It rides on 20-inch wheels and features LED headlights and taillights that fit its modern, confident look. The design leans heavily into Omoda’s futuristic aesthetic, and it’s easily one of the brand’s most eye-catching models to date.

    Interior

Inside, things take a serious leap into premium territory. Our tester came fitted with a cream-and-brown interior that wouldn’t look out of place in a far more expensive German SUV. Dual 12.3-inch screens take centre stage, supported by a Sony audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof that brings in plenty of light. Cabin ambience is clearly one of the C9’s strong suits.

Not everything is perfect, though. The infotainment system can be a bit finicky when it comes to Apple CarPlay as we found ourselves trying to reconnect quite a few times. On the plus side, we really appreciate the presence of physical controls for the air conditioning. In a world where everything has been swallowed by touchscreens, being able to twist actual knobs feels like a small luxury on its own.

    Power and Performance

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with four electric motors. Combined output is an astonishing 440 kW and 915 Nm, sent to all four wheels through a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Omoda claims a 0 to 100 km/h sprint of 4.9 seconds, and based on how it moves, that figure seems believable.

On our drive, the C9 continued to impress. In HEV mode we managed 2.4 L/100km, and 6.9 L/100km overall across mixed conditions. For a large SUV with this much performance, those numbers are noteworthy.

    Verdict

The Omoda C9 1.5T PHEV Explore AWD is a bold step into premium hybrid territory. It looks good, feels luxurious and delivers performance figures that genuinely surprise. With pricing starting at R999,900, it brings a lot to the table, especially for buyers looking for style, pace and efficiency in one package.
