The Leapmotor C10 REEV enters the market with a clever proposition: give drivers the benefits of electric motoring without forcing them into the full EV lifestyle. In a country where charging infrastructure still varies wildly, this range-extended electric SUV feels less like a gamble and more like a calculated step forward.
At its core, the C10 REEV is an electric vehicle. The wheels are driven by an electric motor producing around 158kW and 320Nm, delivering instant torque and smooth, linear acceleration. The petrol engine, a 1.5-litre unit, never directly drives the wheels. Instead, it acts purely as a generator, kicking in only when the battery charge drops. The transition between electric and generator operation is impressively seamless, reinforcing the EV-first experience.

Around town, the C10 REEV is quiet, refined, and easy to live with. Throttle response is immediate, making stop-start traffic effortless. On the open road, it feels stable and composed, with enough punch for confident overtakes. Ride comfort is well judged, leaning toward softness without feeling floaty, and road noise is kept nicely in check. This is a relaxed, confidence-inspiring SUV rather than a sporty one.
Inside, Leapmotor has gone for a minimalist, tech-heavy approach, which may not be to everyone’s taste, particularly with features like the controversial key card, among other things. A large central touchscreen handles most functions, supported by a clean digital instrument cluster. Materials feel solid, if not outright premium, and the cabin design prioritises space and light. Rear legroom is generous, making it family-friendly, while the boot offers ample space for daily duties and weekend trips.
Efficiency is one of the C10 REEV’s strongest cards. In typical mixed driving, electric-only range covers most urban use, while the petrol generator extends total driving range comfortably beyond 900km, depending on driving style. This effectively removes range anxiety from the equation, which is a major selling point.

Safety and driver assistance technology are well represented, with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, multiple airbags and parking aids included. Leapmotor clearly understands that modern buyers expect technology to be standard rather than optional.
The R799,900 pricing is competitive against midsize hybrid and EV SUVs, positioning the C10 REEV as a value-driven alternative rather than a luxury statement. Brand recognition and aftersales support will be key factors in its long-term success, but on product alone, Leapmotor has made a strong first impression.
Verdict
The Leapmotor C10 REEV is a smart, forward-thinking SUV that bridges the gap between combustion and full electric motoring. Smooth, efficient and genuinely practical, it feels tailor-made for markets transitioning into electrification, and it might just be one of the most sensible electrified SUVs you can buy right now.
