    Subaru updates the much-loved Forester

Subaru has always been one of those manufacturers associated with hot hatches or sedans. On the other side of the coin are its family-oriented SUVs, which some might deem safe choices. That includes the Crosstrek, Outback and Forester. They are conservative but effective for what they are. We have always been fans of the Forester, and it is now in its sixth generation. We recently spent time with the all-new Subaru Forester.

    What’s new?

The 2025 Forester features a bolder exterior design with a larger grille, compact LED headlights and Subaru’s latest star-cluster emblem. The sixth-generation design may have evolved somewhat, but it still maintains the familiar look that has become synonymous with Subaru’s compact SUV.

Inside, the Forester introduces improved infotainment, featuring dual 7-inch touchscreens in the Field model or an 11.6-inch tablet-style display in higher grades. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported, and the Premium model includes a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The cabin remains largely unchanged and the layout does feel a bit dated. The lack of physical buttons is noticeable when navigating the infotainment system, although the Harman Kardon audio system does elevate the experience. Space is good all around, and boot capacity stands at 496 litres.

    Performance and drive

It is powered by a 2.5-litre BOXER engine delivering 136 kW and 247 Nm, paired with a Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-step manual mode and paddle shifters. Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive remains standard, offering stability and grip across various surfaces.

The 2.5-litre BOXER engine delivers what we have come to expect from Subaru, with acceleration that is smooth and composed. The ride quality is comfortable and well sorted. Subaru claims fuel consumption of 7.9L/100km, and our seven-day stint returned 8.7L/100km. Overall, the Subaru Forester remains as practical and capable as ever.

    Final word

The Subaru Forester has evolved, though not dramatically. Its sixth generation continues the formula of being a well-rounded SUV by sticking to what works. Pricing starts from R699,000.
