Toyota South Africa Motors posted solid numbers in February, selling 12 272 new vehicles and securing a 23% share of the domestic market. The performance comes during a month in which total industry sales reached 53 455 units, marking the strongest February result since 2013.
According to naamsa, overall new vehicle sales increased by 11.4% year on year. While the local market showed resilience, exports declined sharply by 28.1% compared to February 2025, with global trade pressures and stricter decarbonisation requirements continuing to affect international demand.
Passenger cars and SUVs
Toyota sold 7 366 passenger vehicles in February, giving the brand a 19.6% share of the segment. Models such as the Corolla Cross, Fortuner, Prado and Urban Cruiser all showed month-on-month growth and played a key role in maintaining the brand’s position in the passenger market.
Lexus contributed 125 units, with the NX, GX and LX leading the charge. Notably, the all-electric Lexus RZ recorded nine sales during the month, up from just one unit in January, suggesting early traction in the premium electric SUV space.
Hilux leads the charge
In the light commercial vehicle segment, the Toyota Hilux remained South Africa’s top-selling bakkie, moving 3 362 units and capturing a 25.5% market share. The Hiace and Land Cruiser 79 Pick-Up also delivered steady volumes.
The broader LCV market grew by 11.9% year on year, aligning with Toyota’s performance in the segment.
In the commercial vehicle space, models such as the Quantum Bus and Hino 300 posted positive results, while Hino’s presence in the heavy commercial segment remained stable.
Fleet and aftersales
Toyota’s fleet division reported that 2 334 companies selected the brand to support their mobility needs during the month. The aftersales and parts division supplied just under two million parts locally and exported over 311 000 additional units.
The bigger picture
February’s results reflect a domestic market that continues to stabilise, supported by moderating inflation and improved credit conditions. While export challenges remain, local demand appears steady for now.
Toyota’s performance places it firmly at the top of the sales charts for the month, supported by strong volumes across passenger, commercial and fleet segments.
