We recently spent some time with the ever-versatile VW California Coast and yes, it is far more than just a dressed-up Caravelle. This is a fully thought-out camper van that rolls straight off the showroom floor ready for adventure.
Visually, it stands apart thanks to its unique alloy wheels, bold “Coast” and “California” badging, and a single sliding door on the driver’s side. It carries that subtle “if you know, you know” presence that camper enthusiasts will appreciate.

Step inside and it quickly becomes clear that Volkswagen has gone all in. The California Coast is a proper four-sleeper, complete with generous storage, a compact kitchenette with stove top, fridge and sink, and even a shower. It is cleverly packaged without feeling cluttered. You also get modern essentials such as a digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus plenty of 12V sockets to keep everything powered up.
Outside, the clever details continue. Fold-away chairs are neatly stored in the boot lid, and there is a pop-out tent and table setup that instantly transforms any stop into a campsite. It is practical without feeling gimmicky.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel producing 146kW and 450Nm, sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Despite tipping the scales at over 2,400kg, the California Coast feels surprisingly composed on the road. Overtaking is effortless and long-distance cruising feels relaxed.
During our stint, we averaged around 10.5L/100km. Considering the size, weight and capability on offer, that is a respectable figure.

While we did not get to use the California Coast to its full camping potential, the feature list alone makes it clear that this is one of the most complete camper vans you can buy without going the aftermarket conversion route.
Pricing comes in at R1,720,700. It is not cheap, but for buyers wanting a turnkey camper with comfort, capability and factory backing, the California Coast makes a strong case.
