The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport enters a crowded compact SUV arena with a blend of refinement, practicality and everyday usability. It does not shout premium, but it delivers a well-rounded experience that many SUV buyers will appreciate.
Driving impressions & dynamics
Power comes from a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The setup produces 77kW and 141Nm, with drive sent to the front wheels.
On the road, the Outlander Sport feels confident and composed for the most part, qualities that matter most in daily driving. Power delivery is smooth and predictable, offering enough responsiveness for city manoeuvres and relaxed highway cruising. While it is not designed to deliver sporty thrills, it balances performance with comfort in a way that feels intuitive and natural.
Ride quality is comfortable over broken surfaces and urban tar alike. Road imperfections are managed well most of the time. Our test unit, however, did have a tendency to feel quite crashy over bumps, almost as if it exaggerated the surfaces it was driving over. This slightly unsettles what is otherwise a refined ride. At higher speeds the suspension settles down and feels composed.
Steering is light and confidence inspiring, which makes parking and navigating through traffic easy. It is an SUV that understands its role as reliable transport with a comfortable character.

Interior comfort & usability
Step inside and the cabin reinforces the Outlander Sport’s practical focus. The dashboard layout is clean and functional, with controls that feel familiar rather than overwhelming.
Materials and finishes are competitive for the segment, and the cabin feels spacious enough for daily needs. Headroom and legroom in both rows are decent, and the rear seats comfortably handle everyday passengers.
The infotainment system is responsive and intuitive, with clear graphics and straightforward menus. Connectivity options are sensible. There is nothing revolutionary here, but everything you need for modern driving life is present. Visibility is good and ergonomics feel well thought out.
Features & technology
In terms of technology and convenience, the Outlander Sport keeps pace with the segment. Standard safety features include a solid set of driver assistance systems that provide reassurance without adding unnecessary complexity.
While it may not offer every premium feature available in the segment, what is included feels genuinely useful. These are systems designed to make city driving easier and highway journeys more comfortable.
Practicality & everyday use
Practicality remains one of the Outlander Sport’s key strengths. Boot space is generous for a compact SUV, offering flexibility for shopping, luggage or weekend gear.
Getting in and out of the vehicle is easy, which makes family use straightforward. There are also several thoughtful storage areas throughout the cabin for everyday items.
Fuel consumption remains reasonable, helping keep running costs manageable. Combined with its comfortable ride and predictable driving manners, the Outlander Sport works well for both short city trips and longer highway drives.

Ownership logic
What makes the Outlander Sport appealing is not necessarily headline figures or flashy features. Instead, it is the way the vehicle fits into everyday life.
This is an SUV that quietly earns your trust over time. Whether it is daily errands, school runs or longer drives out of town, the Mitsubishi feels ready to handle it all without fuss.
Final verdict
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a balanced compact SUV that prioritises comfort, usability and everyday confidence. It does not try to be a luxury product, but it does not feel cheap either.
Instead, it finds a comfortable middle ground between practicality and refinement, making it a sensible option for drivers who value reliability and ease of use.
At a starting price of R449,990, the Outlander Sport positions itself as a dependable SUV that focuses on doing the basics well.
