The Lepas L4 is a new premium compact SUV from the Chery Group that has now officially launched in South Africa. Positioned as a stylish and tech-forward entrant in the segment, the L4 features a distinctive leopard-inspired design and is built on Chery’s LEX platform. Measuring 4,400mm in length with a 2,700mm wheelbase, it aims to combine everyday practicality with modern technology and competitive pricing.

We had a chance to sample the newest kid on the block in range-topping Pantera guise. In terms of design, the L4 avoids looking bland and instead features some interesting styling cues at both the front and rear. Standard features include 17-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, and daytime running lights.

Inside, the cabin is headlined by a 13.2-inch portrait-style infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with wireless charging and a digital driver display. The system uses a high-resolution interface and is paired with a 540-degree camera system, which should make parking and tight manoeuvres a bit easier. Overall the cabin looks modern, although the heavy use of piano black trim may be prone to scratching over time.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine producing 108kW and 235Nm, sent to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. On the road, the L4 feels smooth and comfortable, making it easy to live with in everyday driving. The steering feels slightly vague at times, but the SUV cruises comfortably on the highway. Pulling away from a standstill can bring a bit of turbo lag, though once moving it settles into a relaxed rhythm.

Safety has also been given attention, with a reinforced body structure, six airbags, stability control, ISOFIX anchor points and a suite of driver assistance systems designed to support everyday driving.

Pricing for the range is as follows:

    L4 1.5 Amur Manual – R299,900

    L4 1.5T Javan – R369,900

    L4 1.5T Pantera – R419,900

From our short time behind the wheel, the Lepas L4 presents itself as a comfortable, well-equipped compact SUV, offering a strong mix of design, technology and everyday usability for buyers looking for something new in the segment.
