Renault Kiger 1.0 Techno manual review: Budget SUV with compromises

The Renault Kiger has always been one of the more stylish options in the budget compact SUV space, and this updated version keeps that strength intact. Subtle design tweaks like a slimmer grille, updated lighting signature and new alloy wheels help freshen things up without changing the formula too much.
It still stands out, especially in a segment where many rivals tend to play it safe.
Inside, the Kiger does a decent job of creating a modern feel. You get an 8-inch floating touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital driver display and a clean dual-tone layout. There’s also a surprising amount of space between the front seats, which adds to overall comfort on longer drives.

That said, while it looks good at first glance, the cabin is still very much built to a budget. There’s a lot of hard plastic throughout, which reminds you where costs have been saved.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 52kW and 96Nm, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Around town, it gets the job done. It’s light, easy to drive and the steering is effortless, making it well suited to daily commuting.
However, once you leave the city, the limitations start to show. The engine feels underpowered, especially at altitude, and you often find yourself working the gearbox to keep momentum. It’s not unusable, but it does require patience.

Fuel consumption is another area where expectations and reality don’t quite align. Renault claims 5.3L/100km, but during our time with the car, we averaged closer to 7L/100km.
On the plus side, ride quality is comfortable and forgiving, which suits South African road conditions well. It’s an easy car to live with, and that’s really where it finds its strength.
Pricing for the Renault Kiger 1.0 Techno manual starts at R244,999, which keeps it firmly in the affordable bracket.
