ISUZU Motors South Africa (IMSAf) has invested R510 million in local supplier development as part of its commitment to growing South Africa’s automotive industry, creating jobs, and increasing local vehicle production.
The investment played a significant role in the development of the latest ISUZU D-MAX, helping local suppliers improve their manufacturing capabilities and meet ISUZU’s global quality standards. Through the programme, 729 production tools were developed across the supplier network, supporting the manufacture of 250 locally sourced components used in the new D-MAX.
According to IMSAf Executive Vice President for Procurement and Logistics, Komane Pitso, supplier development is critical to the future of South Africa’s automotive sector. The investment has already delivered positive results in the Eastern Cape.

VSL Manufacturing, which was established as part of ISUZU’s localisation strategy, has created 52 new jobs and now produces major body components for the D-MAX, including bonnets, doors, tailgates, and body-side panels.
The latest D-MAX now features 250 locally manufactured components, including body panels, grille assemblies, seat-trim parts, chassis frames, brake pedals, and various plastic components.
Looking ahead, ISUZU says it remains committed to the goals of the South African Automotive Masterplan and will continue investing in supplier development, small-business growth, and localisation initiatives.
