The South African bakkie market is one of the most competitive in the world, but JMC believes there is still room for a value-focused contender. Enter the new Vigus, a double-cab bakkie aimed at buyers looking for a practical workhorse without stretching the budget.

We recently spent some time behind the wheel of the new Vigus in Muldersdrift to see what it brings to the segment.

The Vigus adopts a straightforward approach to styling. A large front grille, squared-off proportions, muscular body lines, and a high ride height give it the look of a traditional bakkie. It is not trying to reinvent the segment or make a bold design statement, but it has enough presence to look the part.

Inside, the focus is clearly on practicality rather than luxury. The dashboard layout is simple and easy to understand, while physical controls remain in place for key functions. Automatic models receive a touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster, helping modernise the cabin.

Material quality is in line with what you would expect at this price point, but the cabin feels spacious and functional. Buyers looking for premium finishes may need to look elsewhere, but those prioritising usability should find little to complain about.

Power comes from a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine producing 123kW and 430Nm. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic, with both 4×2 and 4×4 derivatives available.

On the road, the Vigus feels every bit like a traditional workhorse. The diesel engine delivers strong low-down torque, making it well suited to daily driving and load-carrying duties.

Behind the wheel, ease of use is one of its biggest strengths. The steering is light at lower speeds, and despite its size, the Vigus never feels intimidating to manoeuvre around town.

We also had the opportunity to sample the vehicle off-road, where it impressed with its capability and composure over rough terrain.

    Final thoughts

Based on our first impressions, the JMC Vigus focuses on the fundamentals that matter most to many bakkie buyers.

It offers a capable turbodiesel engine, straightforward interior, decent off-road ability, and pricing that undercuts many established rivals. While it may not have the polish or premium feel of some competitors, it appears well positioned as a practical and affordable workhorse.
