Geely E2 first drive: South Africa’s newest affordable EV

We recently joined Geely Auto South Africa for the local launch of the new Geely E2, the brand’s most affordable electric vehicle yet. Entering South Africa’s growing entry-level EV segment, the compact hatchback aims to make electric motoring more accessible with a competitive price tag and a practical, city-friendly package.

    Designed for city life

The E2 is a compact hatchback with clean, modern styling and dimensions that make it well suited to urban driving. Inside, the cabin feels surprisingly spacious, thanks in part to its flat floor, while the dual-screen layout gives it a contemporary feel. Practicality is another highlight, with a 375-litre boot complemented by a useful 70-litre front trunk, or “frunk”. Buyers opting for the Apex derivative also benefit from a more comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

    First impressions behind the wheel

Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 85kW, fed by a 39.4kWh battery with a claimed 325km WLTP driving range. Around town, the E2 feels light on its feet, with instant electric torque making it responsive in traffic. It’s clearly tuned with comfort rather than outright performance in mind, but for the daily commute, it feels more than capable.

    Early verdict

Our first drive suggests Geely has put together a compelling package. The E2 is practical, well equipped, and easy to drive, while its pricing of R339,900 for the Aspire and R389,900 for the Apex makes it one of the most accessible electric vehicles on the South African market. We’ll reserve our final judgement for a full road test, but first impressions are certainly positive.
