Why the Land Rover Defender 90 is still one of the coolest 4×4 on sale

The Land Rover Defender 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE is what happens when luxury and proper boere toughness have a baby.
We recently spent time with the two-door Defender and, honestly, this thing has more presence than a politician arriving at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Short wheelbase. Wide stance. Chunky wheels. Boxy proportions. It looks like it was designed to climb a mountain, negotiate lobola in a rural village, and still pull up at Marble afterwards for oysters and champagne. Somehow, Land Rover has managed to make something this rugged look genuinely premium.
Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre mild-hybrid turbocharged straight-six diesel engine producing 183kW and 570Nm. The D250 isn’t about outright speed. Instead, it delivers effortless low-end torque and relaxed cruising, making it feel perfectly suited to the Defender’s character. Whether you’re overtaking on the highway or crawling through rough terrain, there’s always enough performance in reserve. The driving experience is deeply impressive.

You sit high up with an excellent view of the road ahead, while the electronic air suspension glides over potholes as if South African roads had been resurfaced yesterday. One of the Defender’s clever party tricks is its ability to raise itself when the terrain becomes more challenging and lower itself to make getting in and out easier. Handy if your grandmother is dressed for church and would rather keep her dignity intact.
Then there’s the off-road capability, which is frankly ridiculous. The Defender 90 comes standard with permanent all-wheel drive and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system. Turn the dial and the vehicle adapts to mud, sand, rocks, or gravel. It sounds simple, but it works remarkably well and gives even inexperienced drivers plenty of confidence when venturing off the beaten track.
One of our favourite features is the Ground View camera. Through some expensive British witchcraft, the system effectively lets you “see through” the bonnet while crawling over obstacles. Rocks, ruts, and hidden terrain suddenly appear on the screen beneath the vehicle, making technical off-roading far less intimidating.

Inside, the Defender 90 strikes an impressive balance between ruggedness and luxury. You get durable rubber flooring that can cope with muddy takkies after a weekend adventure, alongside soft-touch leather, premium finishes, a large infotainment touchscreen, and enough technology to make a Sandton apartment jealous. Everything feels solid, expensive, and built to withstand both harsh terrain and the daily school run.
Despite being a two-door, the Defender 90 is also more practical than you might expect. Accessing the rear seats requires a bit of flexibility, but once you’re back there, space is surprisingly generous for adults.
At R1,159,900, the Defender 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE isn’t inexpensive, but it offers a driving experience that few SUVs can match. It blends genuine off-road capability with premium comfort in a way that feels authentic rather than forced. If you want a luxury SUV that’s just as happy exploring the bush as it is cruising through Sandton, the Defender 90 continues to stand in a class of its own.
