We recently got our first taste of the new GWM ORA 5 1.5T HEV Ultra Luxury DHT, and if our initial drive is anything to go by, GWM has put together a compelling contender in the compact SUV segment.
Built on GWM’s new ONE platform, the ORA 5 combines bold SUV styling with the brand’s signature rounded design language. It certainly stands out on the road, while the spacious cabin feels modern and well finished. The latest Coffee OS infotainment system is intuitive to use, with crisp graphics, seamless smartphone integration and responsive voice controls that make interacting with the system effortless.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 164kW and 476Nm. The two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) works seamlessly in the background, switching between electric and petrol power almost imperceptibly. The result is a hybrid SUV that feels quick off the line, delivers confident overtaking performance and promises impressive fuel efficiency.
Comfort also stood out during our drive. The suspension dealt well with varying road surfaces, making the ORA 5 feel composed and refined, while the generous list of standard safety features and driver assistance systems adds further appeal.

Our time with the ORA 5 was brief, but it certainly left a positive impression. It feels comfortable, well equipped and surprisingly eager to drive, and we’re looking forward to spending more time with it for a full road test.
