The BYD Atto 8 Performance DM-P AWD is the Chinese manufacturer’s flagship plug-in hybrid SUV in South Africa, and after spending time behind the wheel, it’s clear this isn’t just another large family SUV. It combines generous space, an impressive list of standard features and performance that’s capable of catching even seasoned enthusiasts off guard.
From the outside, the Atto 8 doesn’t scream performance. Its styling is clean and modern, with a bold front-end, slim LED headlights, flush door handles and large alloy wheels. Around the back, the full-width LED light bar gives it a distinctive look, and it’s easily one of our favourite design elements on the vehicle. Overall, it’s a handsome SUV, although its understated appearance hides what’s lurking beneath the skin.
Step inside and you’ll quickly realise that BYD hasn’t held back on equipment. The cabin feels premium and is packed with technology, headlined by a rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features four-zone voice control, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems.

As a seven-seater, the Atto 8 is clearly aimed at families, and there’s no shortage of space for passengers. The quality of the materials also leaves a positive impression, while the amount of standard equipment makes it feel like excellent value when compared with similarly priced rivals.
The real surprise, however, comes once you get moving.
Power comes from BYD’s DM-P plug-in hybrid system, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors. Together, they produce an impressive 359kW and 675Nm, sent to all four wheels.
Those figures are impressive on paper, but they don’t fully prepare you for just how quick the Atto 8 feels. Despite weighing more than 2.5 tonnes, it launches with remarkable urgency, reaching 100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds. The acceleration is relentless and delivers the kind of performance you’d normally associate with a high-performance SUV rather than a practical seven-seater.
Yet it’s not all about outright speed. Around town, the Atto 8 feels refined and comfortable, making it just as happy carrying the family as it is surprising unsuspecting motorists at the traffic lights. BYD also claims fuel consumption of just 1.4L/100km and a combined driving range of up to 1,020km, highlighting the efficiency benefits of its plug-in hybrid powertrain.

After spending time with the Atto 8 Performance DM-P AWD, it’s easy to understand what BYD is trying to achieve. It offers the practicality of a large family SUV, the technology expected in a modern luxury vehicle and performance that genuinely exceeds expectations.
Priced at R1,259,900, it certainly isn’t inexpensive, but when you consider the level of equipment, luxury and performance on offer, the BYD Atto 8 makes a compelling case for itself. If you’re in the market for a premium seven-seat SUV that can comfortably handle family duties while delivering sports car-like acceleration, this flagship BYD deserves a place on your shortlist.
