Having sold approximately 2.65 million units in more than 80 countries and regions, the updated Lexus ES has arrived and Lexus is hoping it will add to the success of its predecessors.

    Exterior

Upfront, the refreshed Lexus ES spots a redesigned trademark-Lexus ‘spindle’ grille incorporating an L-shaped mesh pattern. In addition, the Lexus ES adopts geometric square bezels within the headlamp cluster and also incorporates new BladeScan adaptive high-beam technology (grade dependent).

The advanced BladeScan adaptive high-beam system (AHS), found in the flagship LS sedan, is now on offer in the refreshed ES model.

Local buyers look forward to 17- and 18-inch wheel options for the respective grades. Two exterior colours, Sonic Iridium and Sonic Chrome have been introduced.

    Interior

Inside, the 12.3-inch widescreen display has been brought forward by more than 100mm compared to the current model. With this, the infotainment screen debuts touch-display functionality.

A new Hazel interior colour has been introduced in the flagship Lexus ES LS model. This is in addition to a newly developed Mauve that blends brown and grey tones, and is available for the whole range.

    Safety

The safety department has bolstered with the improvement of the performance of the single-lens camera and millimetre-wave radar which has been enhanced to expand the response range of the Pre-Collision System (PCS). Other improved systems include Emergency Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist.

    Driving dynamics

In South Africa, the Lexus ES is currently available in petrol ES 250 EX grade, an ES 300 hybrid EX grade (entry) ES 300 hybrid SE grade (top spec). To further enhance the ride quality and comfort levels, the rear suspension braces of the new Lexus ES have switched from a single-sheet structure to a stronger dual-sheet structure. Further, Lexus says the improved torsional and lateral rigidity of the rear suspension enhances control and achieves more linear and neutral handling faithful to a driver’s intentions.

    Local launch

The new minor change ES range will comprise three model derivatives which Lexus SA will announce together with spec details at launch in quarter four this year.
