Toyota RAV4 2.5 PHEV E-FOUR first drive review: Efficiency with a spark

The Toyota RAV4 has long been a sensible choice, but the 2.5 PHEV E-FOUR adds something more exciting to the formula. After covering more than 350 km behind the wheel, we came away impressed by how effortlessly it blends comfort, strong performance, and genuinely impressive efficiency.

The new RAV4 looks sharper and more confident than before. Its refreshed design gives it proper road presence without losing the familiar SUV shape that has made the RAV4 so popular. It looks equally at home outside a school, on a long motorway journey, or heading away for the weekend. The only trade-off is boot space. At 466 litres, the plug-in hybrid is slightly less practical than some buyers may expect.

Inside, the cabin feels modern, clean, and easy to live with. The 12.9-inch infotainment screen is the centrepiece, but Toyota has wisely retained physical controls for the functions you use most. The digital instrument cluster is crisp and easy to understand, while the layout feels practical rather than overly complicated. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are also simple to operate, helping to take some of the stress out of long-distance driving.

Out on the road, the RAV4 PHEV is where things get interesting. Despite riding on 20-inch wheels, it remains comfortable and composed, with very little road noise making its way into the cabin. The ride feels settled and refined, giving the RAV4 the confidence of a vehicle that is ready to cover serious distances.

The claimed all-electric range of 142 km is one of this model’s biggest attractions. In the right conditions, it appears realistic, which means many owners could complete their daily commute, school runs, and local errands without using a drop of petrol. When the petrol engine does join in, the transition is smooth and unobtrusive.

Power comes from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine working alongside electric motors. The petrol engine produces 139 kW and 228 Nm, while the complete hybrid system delivers a strong 225 kW. That is enough to send the RAV4 from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.7 seconds, which is seriously quick for a family SUV. The electric motors give it an instant response off the line, while the petrol engine provides the reassurance needed for longer journeys.

Fuel economy is where this RAV4 really earns its badge. Toyota claims an incredibly low 0.7L/100km, but as with any plug-in hybrid, that figure depends heavily on charging regularly. During our 350 km test, we achieved an average of 2.5L/100km. That is still exceptional for an SUV of this size, especially one with this much performance.

The Toyota RAV4 2.5 PHEV E-FOUR is more than just the sensible option. It is a polished, fast, and surprisingly engaging family SUV. Yes, the smaller boot is worth considering, but if you have regular access to charging, the combination of electric range, real-world efficiency, comfort, and performance is difficult to ignore. The RAV4 PHEV is proof that practical motoring does not have to be boring. The RAV4 2.5 PHEV E-FOUR kicks off at R1,043,900.
