The compact SUV segment is full of familiar faces, but the BYD Atto 2 Comfort arrives with enough character to make you look twice. We recently spent some time behind the wheel and came away thinking it could be a strong option for South African buyers who want something practical, efficient, and a little more interesting than the usual choices.

    Exterior design

The Atto 2 has a bold, chunky look that gives it real presence on the road. At the rear, the full-width LED taillights, angular spoiler, and aggressive diffuser add a sporty edge. It may be a compact SUV, but it does not look timid.

    Interior

Inside, BYD keeps things clean and modern. The 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen is the star of the dashboard, supported by an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. The cabin feels simple to use and appears well suited to daily life. It misses out on a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging in Comfort Line specification, but the important features are still there.

    Spacious cabin

Practicality appears to be one of the Atto 2’s strongest points. Its upright rear design creates a useful 425-litre boot, providing enough room for the weekly shop, school bags, or luggage for a short family getaway. It feels like the type of SUV that should slot easily into everyday life.

    Powertrain

Under the bonnet, the Atto 2 combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 7.8kWh Blade Battery and an electric motor. Together, they produce 122kW and 300Nm.

On the road, the powertrain feels smooth and relaxed, with power arriving in a predictable and linear manner. It is not trying to be a hot hatch, but it feels punchy enough for city driving and open-road trips.

    Fuel economy

BYD claims a range of more than 965km from a full tank and a fully charged battery. While we were not able to verify that figure during our first drive, it suggests the Atto 2 should be easy to live with, especially for families and commuters who want to spend less time worrying about fuel stops.

    First impressions

The BYD Atto 2 Comfort makes a positive first impression. It looks distinctive, offers useful space, and combines petrol and electric power in a smooth, refined package. It may not have every luxury feature, but it covers the essentials while offering plenty of character. A longer test will reveal how it performs in everyday ownership.
