The people’s updated Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI Life driven

We recently drove the facelifted and locally built VW Polo Life 1.0 TSI. Built at VW’s Kariega Plant, (formally known as Uitenhage Plant) VW has sold over 73 000 units of the 6th generation Polo.

    Refreshed look

The front bumper has a new design with new fog lights, a new rear bumper design with reflectors, and a new taillight design. Our test unit was finished in Smoky Grey Metallic and rocking a set of optional “Torsby” 16-inch wheels. Other options fitted to our chariot include a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, rear-view camera and IQ.Light – LED matrix headlamps. Overall the Polo still looks stunning on all fronts.

    Inside

Inside, you’ll find new seat trim and interior inserts, and a multi-functional steering wheel. The facelift now comes with a Digital cockpit. The Discover Media infotainment system fitted to our test unit included Navigation with MapCare, wireless App-Connect, voice control, wireless mobile charging and a multi-colour Digital Cockpit Pro which are features that make driving the Polo daily a joy. It’s a solid cabin but there is somehow evidence of cost-cutting to a certain degree as there is a generous use of plastic used, which is used mostly on the door panels which does cheapen the popular hatchback a bit.

    Power

Powering the Polo 1.0 Life TSI is a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 70kW and 175Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. The manual gearbox in the Polo has to be one of the best we’ve experienced as it shifts smoothly all the time without fail. Buyers also have a choice of a 7-speed DSG gearbox with this model. Our test car is fitted with the optional Safety Package which includes adaptive cruise control. The latter made cruising on the highway much more pleasant.

    Final words

The Polo has always been a solid product and this model is no different. Some might feel the segment has gone expensive and that’s a fair point but it’s no longer entry-level and it offers buyers way more than ever before – this is in line with consumer demand and expectations. The VW Polo range is priced from R 315,000. Our test Polo 1.0 TSI Life starts from R350,000.
