Big bucks for big bakkies: SA’s costliest double-cabs

If you thought bakkies were just for hauling bricks and Sunday braais, think again. The game has changed. In Mzansi, double-cabs are now just as much about luxury, tech, and badge power as they are about toughness. And if you’re shopping at the top end, be ready to part with over a bar, easily.

We’ve rounded up the five most expensive bakkies you can buy brand-new in Mzansi right now, based on the latest pricing, spec levels, and availability.

    1. Ineos Grenadier 3.0T Quartermaster double cab – R1,799,500

Sitting comfortably at the top of the list is the rugged, no-nonsense Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster. With a price tag just under R1.8 million, this British-built bakkie is designed for the serious off-road enthusiast. It comes with a 3.0-litre straight-six (petrol or diesel), full-time 4WD, and a proper ladder frame chassis.

    2. Jeep Gladiator 3.6 Rubicon – R1,385,374

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon brings a taste of the American wild west to our roads. At under R1.4 million, it’s more lifestyle than workhorse, powered by a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine. Standard kit includes removable doors, a fold-down windscreen, and enough attitude to fill a Karoo sunset.

    3. Volkswagen Amarok 3.0 TDI V6 Aventura 4Motion – R1,252,200

VW’s flagship Amarok Aventura comes dressed to impress. With a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel producing 184 kW and 600 Nm, this Amarok offers all-wheel drive, premium interior finishes, and a commanding road presence, all for just over R1.23 million.

    4. Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0 V6 – R1,270,000

The Ranger Raptor is the bakkie equivalent of a gym bro — wide, loud, and absolutely unapologetic. With 292 kW and 583 Nm from its twin-turbo V6, it’s the most powerful double-cab on this list. Fox suspension, Baja mode, and 4WD all come standard.

    5. Isuzu D-Max AT35 Arctic Trucks – R1,182,100

Last but not least, the Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 takes Isuzu’s proven formula and turns it into a high-riding, trail-chewing beast. It keeps the familiar 3.0-litre diesel under the hood, but adds oversized tyres, extended wheel arches, and suspension upgrades — all for around R1.18 million.
