After being spotted numerous times whilst testing, BMW has finally taken the veils off the M4 convertible which has ditched the fancy three-piece folding hardtop in favor of a weight saving soft top, which also allows for more luggage capacity.

    Exterior design

The M4 Competition M xDrive convertible boasts an opinion-splitting large frameless kidney grille, powerfully contoured wheel arches, distinctive M Side Gills, forged M light-alloy wheels measuring 19-inches at the front and 20-inches at the rear as standard, blacked-out quad exhausts, as well as a fabric softtop. The latter is 40% lighter than the predecessor’s metallic roof and boot capacity is 80-litres larger. The softtop can be opened or closed in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h, thanks to its electric drive mechanism.

Some exterior optional extras include BMW M headlights in Shadowline with Laserlight, M Exterior Package and Anthracite Silver effect softtop

    Interior design and technology

As standard, the M4 Competition M xDrive convertible features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touch display running the latest iDrive infotainment with M specific graphics and menus like powertrain and chassis setting, and M Drive Professional including M Drift Analyser. Additionally M Sport seats with optional seat ventilation are also offered as standard with sporty looking M Carbon bucket seats offered as an option.

    Power and performance

The BMW M4 Competition M xDrive convertible is powered by a high-revving turbocharged 3-litre straight-six engine making 375 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. Its 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel-drive system allows the car to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.

Other M bits and bobs fitted to the M4 Competition M xDrive convertible include Active M Differential, Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Compound brakes as standard or optional M Carbon ceramic brakes to list a few.

    Availability

Production of the BMW M4 Competition M xDrive convertible will start in July 2021.
