Omoda C7 Elegance review: A serious challenger in the premium SUV space

The Omoda C7 enters a competitive SUV segment with a clear strategy: stand out visually, offer strong specification levels and deliver a refined driving experience at a competitive price. From first glance, it succeeds in grabbing attention. The styling is bold and contemporary, with sharp detailing and a confident road presence that feels more premium than mainstream. The silhouette does resemble the Jaguar F-Pace, which is likely why it aesthetically leans toward a premium appearance.

On the move, the C7 feels composed and mature. Power delivery is smooth, with enough responsiveness for daily driving and highway overtakes. It is not aggressively sporty, especially in its cornering ability, but it does not feel underpowered either. The engine and transmission pairing prioritises comfort and smoothness, making it well suited to urban commutes and longer weekend drives alike. We did notice a slightly sluggish gear change at times, but it is something one gets used to.

Ride quality leans toward comfort, soaking up road imperfections effectively. Steering is light enough for easy manoeuvring but gains enough weight at speed to inspire confidence. Overall, the C7 feels stable and relatively planted, delivering a reassuring driving experience that many buyers in this segment will appreciate.

Step inside and the cabin reinforces the SUV’s upmarket ambitions. The interior design is modern and tech-focused, with digital displays and clean lines giving it a contemporary feel. Materials appear well chosen for the price point, and the overall fit and finish feel competitive. The infotainment system is responsive and the layout feels intuitive rather than overwhelming. We did note the oddly placed centre on-dash vents. Their position feels unusual, although we understand that it is likely due to the large central screen occupying that space.

In terms of space and practicality, the C7 remains solid. Rear passengers have more than adequate room, and boot capacity meets the expectations of a family-oriented SUV. The C7 manages to combine visual appeal with everyday usability, which is crucial in this crowded segment.

Fuel efficiency is reasonable at 9.3L/100km when considering its 145kW and 290Nm output from the 1.6 TGDI engine. Importantly, the C7 feels cohesive, not just a collection of features, but a well-rounded package.

At R589,900, the Omoda C7 Elegance is a bold and capable SUV that successfully blends design, technology and comfort into an attractive offering. It feels modern without being complicated and stylish without sacrificing usability. For buyers wanting something distinctive yet sensible, the C7 deserves serious consideration.
