The new Volkswagen Transporter Kombi SWB Life modernises the familiar Transporter formula with updated styling, including LED lighting and a wider grille that helps distinguish it from its predecessor. Despite its van-based roots, the design feels more refined and passenger-friendly than ever before.
Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned and now features a 12-inch Digital Cockpit and a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The layout is modern, spacious, and easy to navigate, although having most of the vehicle’s functions buried within touchscreen menus can become frustrating while driving.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine producing 125kW and 390Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Kombi delivers a comfortable and relaxed driving experience, particularly on longer journeys, although the engine can feel slightly short of urgency during overtaking manoeuvres on provincial roads.
Fuel consumption proved respectable, returning an average of 8.6L/100km during our time with the vehicle, compared with Volkswagen’s claimed figure of 8.0L/100km.

At R1,174,600, the Transporter Kombi SWB Life won’t suit every budget, but it offers a strong blend of practicality, comfort, and refinement. If your priority is moving people in comfort rather than outright performance, it’s a capable and well-rounded package.
